With all the talk about mining conversations about your brand on Twitter and other social networks, it's easy to overlook the conversations that are going on right under your nose: calls to your customer service center. An article on AdAge.com details what Rogers Wireless, one of Canada's largest wireless providers, is doing to study calls to identify cost and operating efficiencies, re-shape marketing efforts and,…See More

Lawyers use Social Networks

I haven't heard any jokes about lawyers and Facebook yet, but I'll bet it's only a matter of time. This study commissioned by Lexis Nexis reveals that more than 70 percent of attorneys belong to a social networking site and that number has grown 25 percent over the past year. Usage differs for corporate counsel and private practice lawyers. Corporate counsel seeks access to exclusive content and information…See More

Where did the Current Dairy Problem Come From?

In some of the previous posts to this blog, we have established that cheese pricing as influenced by supply and demand has led to the current economic woes of the U.S. Dairy Industry. More milk goes to cheese than any other category and the Federal Milk Marketing Order payment system is based primarily on cheese prices. How did we get too much cheese, who did it, and when will it be corrected? In this post we'll examine what led to the current dilemma and what it will take to return to high milk…See More

Students wanted

We are looking for a new approach to gather global data for a big editorial project that we do annually. I think this project would be a great opportunity for a graduate student or group of students to take on as a class project. I wish there was a "Craigslist" out there for something like this. Wouldn't it be great to be able to post a project where students (and professors) could browse, like a help-wanted list? Maybe it does exist and we just need to dig some more. In the meantime, we're…See More

Research Park under construction!

I broke ground here today. My thought is to "build" a research park, a place where we can develop new research tools and test them before taking them live on our other WATT sites. The park will also include a library where we can store ideas from other sources. And finally, with the thought that this park may someday be open to others, there will be interactive space for discussions and idea-sharing, and a place for news items of interest to researchers and marketers, particularly those in the…See More

US jobs to increase and continue shift from goods-producing to service-providing

A report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that employment growth through 2018 will be concentrated in the service-providing sector, with the largest growth in professional and business services and health care and social assistance. The BLS projects that the service-providing sectors will add a total of 14.6 million jobs (96% of the increase in total employment) between 2008 and 2018. The top 10… Continue

C-level execs say ad providers more important to strategy

The sixth annual “Decision Dynamics” study found that, at 20% more important this year, advertising and marketing providers topped the list of other types of providers in terms of their growing significance in companies’ business strategy. Furthermore, suppliers who offer solutions have an advantage. Respondents say the provider who is “most proactive about helping” will get their business, in good times and in bad. These… Continue

"Chinese Facebook" tops 100 million users

Social networks are taking China by storm, where Renren.com -- a Facebook-style site -- is expanding from college students to the larger population. The site had 100 million users at the end of October, a large fraction of the 360 million Chinese online. Part of RenRen's success is due to Twitter's and Facebook's being banned by the government, noted in this Advertising Age article by Normandy Madden. A campaign… Continue
